In a joint project the Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast Studies (IOS) in Regensburg (Germany) and the OSCE Academy in Bishkek (Kyrgyz Republic) seek to develop a better understanding of the tensions between internationalization and nation building in the politics of human rights in Central Asia (e.g. the implementation of international human rights standard and how struggles with reforms impact nation states in this region).

A core objective of this joint project is to build a network of academics and young scholars from Central Asia working on human rights in the region. We will discuss challenges as well as best practice with a focus on human rights and rule of law fulfillment in Central Asia under current political, social, economic, and cultural circumstances and how to approach them from a perspective of academic research.

As part of this joint effort, the IOS and the OSCE Academy will select up to eight emerging scholars from and working in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan to take part in an international workshop at the OSCE Academy in Bishkek. We welcome applications from academics and young scholars working on human rights in Central Asia in the fields of political science, law, anthropology, and sociology and related disciplines. During the workshop, we will also discuss different opportunities to publish participants’ presentations.
